Nearly Four Decades of Foot & Ankle Care

Dr. Berenter began his career in the San Francisco area, where he served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the California College of Podiatric Medicine while building a private practice. In 1989 he brought his expertise to San Diego — and he has been caring for patients in the region ever since.

Over more than three decades in San Diego, he has treated everything from everyday foot pain to complex surgical cases, earning a reputation for thoughtful diagnosis, advanced surgical skill, and genuine care for the people he treats.

A Legacy of Leadership in San Diego Podiatry

Dr. Berenter helped shape how foot and ankle care is delivered in San Diego. He was the first podiatrist to operate at Scripps Memorial Hospital San Diego, where he established the hospital's podiatric division and served as its first Chief of Podiatry. He later became Vice President of Synergy Orthopedics, working side by side with orthopedic specialists in a collaborative, whole-body approach to musculoskeletal care.

He went on to become a founding partner of SoCal Foot Care, which he grew into the largest private-practice podiatry group in Southern California. It was a career defined by building, leading, and advancing the standard of podiatric care across the region.

A Return to What Matters Most

After years of growth and leadership in larger practice settings, Dr. Berenter made a deliberate choice: to return to a smaller, more personal model of care.

At Girard Orthopedic Surgeons, he is once again able to focus on what he believes patients deserve most — direct physician involvement, careful listening, clear communication, and a treatment plan built around the individual rather than a corporate system. He favors a conservative-first approach when it's appropriate, and brings advanced surgical options to the table when surgery is the right answer.

Innovation

Innovation in Foot & Ankle Treatment

Techniques Dr. Berenter has developed and refined to make treatment more effective and recovery easier.

No-Hardware Bunion Surgery

A modern correction using a small, hidden incision and a dissolving fixation screw — often allowing patients to walk immediately after surgery, with no permanent hardware left behind.

Advanced Hammertoe Correction

Surgical techniques he has developed to straighten painful, contracted toes and relieve long-standing pressure and pain.

Non-Surgical Neuroma Treatment

Ultrasound-guided dehydrated sterile alcohol injection therapy — an approach he has used for more than 20 years to relieve the burning, tingling pain of Morton's neuroma, often without surgery.

Topical Treatment for Fungal Toenails

A topical approach he developed to treat fungal nails while avoiding the side effects associated with oral medications.

Custom Functional Orthotics

Precision orthotics built for everyone from professional and collegiate athletes to patients who simply want to move through their day in comfort.

Conservative First, Surgery When It's Right

Every plan starts with the least invasive option that works — and advances to surgery only when it's truly the best answer.

Sports Medicine

A Background Caring for Elite Athletes

Dr. Berenter served as a podiatry consultant for the U.S. Olympic Training Center, supporting elite athletes across several national teams.

That experience informs how he treats every active patient — with an understanding of how the foot and ankle perform under real-world stress, and how to get people back to the activities they love.

"For nearly forty years, it has been my privilege to care for patients' feet and help them stay active and comfortable. I have always believed that the best medicine happens when a physician takes the time to listen, examine carefully, and treat each person as an individual."

Returning to a smaller private practice lets me do exactly that. I look forward to caring for my longtime patients and welcoming new ones.
